Juicy chicken, savoury sauce and the rice is really fragrant! Even tastes amazing after delivery. The roast pork is also very light and crispy. Love their consistency and portion. I always come back to Gai Wong for my chicken rice craving.

We had a fantastic dinner at Gai Wong in North Melbourne, an authentic Malaysian restaurant on Flemington Road. I ordered the Pau Ka Liao and it was delicious: rich, full of flavour and the perfect comfort dish. The venue has plenty of seating inside but it’s clearly a popular spot, there was a short line and we waited about 5 minutes before being seated. Here are some other standout dishes on their menu: Hainanese Chicken Rice Kon Lo Mee Curry Chicken Chai Boey Gai See Hor Fun Uncle Lip’s Fried Chicken Wings Pau Ka Liao The service was friendly and efficient, the flavours genuine, and the atmosphere relaxed yet busy in the best way. If you’re looking for quality Malaysian comfort food in North Melbourne, Gai Wong is a top pick

Came on a friend's recommendation, and ran into some Singaporean friends who eat here so I guess that's a good sign. We had a booking for our group of 7 but our table was partially occupied when we arrived. Another group finished while we were waiting so ended up moving to that table instead. Food wise we had a family set plus extra rice, chicken wings, and greens to share. I found the flavours to be decent without being particularly outstanding, with the chicken broth on the side perhaps the best element. Overall good enough to consider for a return if I'm passing this way again.

THE BEST hainanese chicken rice. Don’t even fight me on this one. The chicken is served cold - so tender, and flavourful. The spring onion and ginger dipping sauce is homemade - please sell it by the jar! Well priced and authentic meal, will always come back.

I love Hainanese chicken rice and this pace is the best. Chicken is tender, sauce is tasty. Staffs are friendly too. It’s worth to drive from eastern suburbs. I definitely come back. Thank you for the great lunch.

Gai Wong has the kind of energy that makes you believe you’re walking into a life-changing chicken rice moment — and to be fair, it *almost* is. The Hainanese chicken comes out silky, smug, and perfectly chilled like it’s auditioning for a skincare commercial. The rice? Fragrant, glossy, and so unapologetically oily you could probably buff your shoes with it. It’s indulgence and comfort holding hands. Then your eyes wander to the combo menu — a seductive trap dressed in laminated glory. “Soup! Sauce! Extra bits!” it promises. You fall for it. We all do. But halfway through the meal, the realisation hits: this combo is the culinary version of microtransactions. A masterclass in deception. The soup could’ve been yours for free if you ordered smarter, and that sauce? Overhyped, oversalted, and not even pulling its weight. The smart move is going old-school — get the rice, the chicken, skip the sauce, and bask in the smug glow of having outwitted capitalism for once. Still, there’s something addictive about Gai Wong’s ritual. The line snakes out the door like a cult gathering, and when your plate finally arrives, all logic and restraint disappear. The chicken gleams under the light; the aroma makes your soul hum. You forgive the combo scam. You forgive the crowd. You even forgive yourself. Because at the end of the day, when that perfect spoonful of rice and chicken hits your mouth, you’re not thinking about the $3 upsell — you’re thinking, “Long live the Chicken King.”
